What’s the Best Fabric for Golf Shirts?

There isn’t one perfect fabric for every golfer or every round.

The best material depends on what you value most: lightweight performance, softness, breathability, temperature regulation, ease of care, or how naturally the shirt moves from the course into the rest of your day.

Recycled synthetic blends are excellent for stretch, moisture management and wrinkle resistance. Pima cotton and cotton-rich blends offer softness, breathability and a more natural hand. Fine merino wool regulates temperature exceptionally well and works beautifully in changing conditions. TENCEL adds softness, drape and breathability to warm-weather fabrics.

Is Polyester Good for Golf Shirts?

From a performance standpoint, polyester works very well for golf. It is lightweight, durable, wrinkle-resistant and effective at managing moisture. When blended with stretch fibers, it also provides the freedom of movement golfers expect from modern performance apparel.

That is why polyester became so common in golf clothing.

Our concern has never been that polyester doesn’t perform. It does.

The question is whether newly produced, petroleum-based polyester should always be the default.

When synthetic performance is necessary, RADMOR looks to recycled alternatives such as REPREVE, a certified and traceable recycled polyester made in part from post-consumer plastic bottles. Using recycled waste as a raw material helps reduce dependence on virgin petrochemicals while giving existing plastic another useful life.

REPREVE has transformed tens of billions of plastic bottles into recycled materials used across apparel and other industries.

For us, the impact becomes more tangible at the product level.

On average, one of our Taylor Recycled Performance Polos uses the equivalent of approximately 14 recycled plastic bottles in its fabric.

Fourteen bottles may not sound transformative on its own.

But multiply that by hundreds or thousands of shirts, season after season, and small material decisions begin to add up.

For hot weather, travel and performance-driven golf, recycled synthetic fabrics allow us to retain the moisture management, stretch, durability and easy care golfers expect while reducing our reliance on newly produced polyester.


What About Ocean Plastic?

Plastic pollution in and around our oceans is one of the reasons recycled material systems matter.

Some specialized recycled fibers go a step further. REPREVE Our Ocean, for example, uses plastic bottles collected from communities within 50 kilometers of coastlines where formal waste-management systems are limited. Those bottles are collected before they can become part of the flow of plastic pollution entering marine environments.

That distinction matters.

Not every recycled polyester fabric is made from ocean-bound plastic, and we think brands should be clear about that.

Our broader goal at RADMOR is to support systems that keep existing plastic in circulation, reduce demand for virgin petroleum-based materials and, where appropriately certified materials are available, help prevent plastic waste from reaching our waterways and oceans in the first place.

Recycling alone won’t solve the problem.

But finding a productive second life for existing waste is better than continually creating new plastic when a recycled alternative can do the job.


Is Cotton Good for Golf?

Absolutely.

Golf was played in cotton long before technical synthetics became common, and premium cotton still offers something difficult to replicate: softness, breathability and a natural feel against the skin.

Long-staple Pima cotton is particularly well suited to golf because of its smooth hand, strength and refined appearance. It also transitions more naturally away from the course than many purely technical fabrics.

The trade-off is that pure cotton generally dries more slowly than synthetic performance fabrics and may require a little more care.

That is why we often like cotton-rich blends.

Combining premium Pima cotton with recycled synthetic fibers and a small amount of stretch can preserve much of cotton’s natural softness and breathability while adding recovery, movement and moisture management.

For golfers who want one shirt that feels exceptional on the course and still looks right several hours after the round ends, a thoughtfully constructed cotton-rich blend is difficult to beat.

 

What About Merino Wool Golf Shirts?

Merino wool is one of the most versatile natural fibers in apparel.

It helps regulate temperature, provides warmth without unnecessary bulk and naturally manages odor better than many conventional fabrics.

That makes fine-gauge merino particularly well suited to cool mornings, changing weather, travel and transitional seasons.

It also offers something increasingly important in modern golf style: refinement.

A merino polo or lightweight sweater can perform comfortably on the course without looking like technical sportswear once the round is over.

The trade-offs are cost and care. High-quality merino is more expensive than many common golf fabrics and typically benefits from gentler washing and proper storage.

Treated well, however, it can remain part of a wardrobe for years.

 

What Is TENCEL, and Why Is It Used in Golf Clothing?

TENCEL is a branded lyocell fiber made from wood-based raw material.

It is known for its smooth feel, breathability and fluid drape, making it particularly useful in garments designed for warm weather and everyday comfort.

In blends, TENCEL can add softness and movement without creating the overly technical feel associated with some performance fabrics.

For us, its appeal is both aesthetic and functional.

It feels good.

It wears beautifully.

And it gives designers another option beyond relying exclusively on petroleum-based synthetics.


Which Fabric Is Best for Hot-Weather Golf?

For very hot or humid conditions, lightweight recycled synthetic blends often provide the fastest drying and strongest moisture-management performance.

That said, fabric weight and construction matter just as much as fiber content.

A lightweight Pima cotton blend or TENCEL-rich fabric can also be extremely comfortable in warm conditions, particularly for golfers who prefer a softer, more natural feel.

There is no single answer for everyone.

Some golfers prioritize maximum moisture management.

Others care more about softness, breathability and how the shirt feels over the course of an entire day.

The best choice is the one that matches how and where you play.


Which Golf Fabric Is Most Sustainable?

We don’t believe sustainability can honestly be reduced to a simple ranking of fibers.

Every material has an impact.

Natural fibers require land, water, energy and processing. Recycled synthetics still shed microfibers and eventually reach the end of their useful life. Manufacturing, dyeing, transportation, washing and disposal all contribute to a garment’s overall footprint.

So rather than claiming one perfect answer, we focus on the decisions we can make better.

Use natural and cellulose-based fibers where they make sense.

Choose recycled synthetics instead of virgin alternatives when technical performance requires them.

Support systems that turn existing waste into useful material.

Reduce unnecessary reliance on newly produced petroleum-based fibers.

And make clothing people genuinely want to keep.
